It was where Shiva had decided to live. It was there the world began. Varanasi is a crossing place, between this world and the next and there was no place on earth more worth visiting. All of time was here, and probably all of space too.
After the claustrophobia of the streets, go down to the ghat see the mighty Ganges and the sky stretching over the opposite bank was a glimpse of another, more spacious world, an empty continent, desert-dry. Whatever else had happened to Varanasi, it had never fallen into ruin – and never would. It was probably the most colourful city on earth where everything was crying out to be photographed and it appeared to me like a black and white vision .
